Kandid Kush artist statement
MACRO-DOSE art exhibition and sale at Moe Greens dispensary and lounge
The most high-resolution, magnified, clear and artistic images of the most expensive, elite, and refined cannabis extracts of all time.
Overview
Kandid Kush (aka Chris Romaine) is one of the world’s leading cannabis photographers—with covers for High Times, and showings at the THC Museum of New York. His otherwordly, hyper-resolution, microscopic, digital photo-compositions unveil beautiful, alien vistas inside every nug or dab.
Technique
To render these worlds, Kandid Kush uses a self-taught, digital image composition technique that involves microscopic lenses, special computing programming, and digital compositing tools.
Each composition can consist of hundreds of individual digital images “stacked” in a computer program. This stacking technique surmounts the blurriness created by the extremely shallow focal length of each individual image. Once composited, the images reveal a strange universe inside every bowl, joint, or banger.
Kandid Kush photo shoots require a specially outfitted vehicle that he drives to out-of-the-way farms for fresh-from-the-field harvest shots of bud. Or shoots can involve elaborately staged trips into hash processing cold-rooms. Camera gear must be strategically acclimatized in stages to the freezing temperatures needed for high-end hash production.
MACRO-DOSE art show details
For his July 2024 San Francisco show MACRO-DOSE at the Moe Greens Cannabis Lounge and Dispensary, Kandid Kush sought to release never-before-seen compositions of extracts in a high-end fine art format. The micron-level microscopic photography, ultra-high resolution, and large-scale 24”x36” framed fine art prints transform the literal subject matter of top-shelf flower and extracts. The compositions evoke abstract studies in color and shape that function on multiple levels: highlighting the fine art of cannabis cultivation and hashmaking, as well as the raw beauty of the natural, physical, organic world at the micron level.
MACRO-DOSE features 12 framed compositions, curated by Romaine with the SF Hash Week team.
Each fine art composition is extremely limited to just 3 pieces. (Total: up to 36 units)
The show formally debuts on July 10 at Moe Greens in San Francisco, CA. The show will be up for the rest of July if you are unable to attend the opening.
A selection of 4 compositions from the set of 12 is also available in the 8.5” x11” collectible size. First-run limited to 10 prints per composition. (Total: 40 units for first run). Printed by AlphaGraphics Mission.
